This comes from an ultra-rare pre-war set produced in Germany in 1923. It features Dave "Beauty" Bancroft, Hall of Fame Shortstop for the New York Giants and was issued at the height of his illustrious career from 1915 to 1930. It is truly remarkable this set even exists considering it was made not very long after the end of World War I. The manufacturer is unknown. The set consists of 25 single pieces originally attached in 5-by-5 sheets. Any example from this set is considered ultra-rare. However, it is even harder to find higher grade examples since they were designed to be separated along perforated edges and, as a result, often did not tear evenly. This one is a real high-end beauty with crisp edges, fantastic centering and vibrant color. PSA has graded 17 total examples to-date and only 2 received a higher grade.
