Winfield was drafted by the San Diego Padres 4th overall in 1973 out of the University of Minnesota. He was a 4-sport athlete in college and expectations were so high for him the Padres elected to have Winfield bypass the Minor Leagues entirely. He made his professional debut with the Padres on June 19, 1973, and exceeded rookie limits with them that season. Winfield went on to have a remarkable 22-year Major League career and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 on the first ballot.
