Upper Deck shifted the branding of Collector’s Choice to UD Choice in 1998, but as always, there were still plenty of cards for seasoned collectors to try to track down from the release. There were several parallels but only three inserts in the product, and by producing different levels of the StarQuest set, Upper Deck provided some additional chase to the "chase cards". In the 30-card StarQuest / RookQuest set, a veteran was paired with a rookie who played the same position, and the top combo from the set was the first card in the checklist. John Elway, the first overall pick of the 1983 NFL Draft, was paired with Peyton Manning, the first overall pick of the 1998 NFL Draft. Elway’s veteran presence made sense to pair with Manning, who was already poised in the pocket like a veteran at age 22, but their careers also took similar but opposite paths. Elway was drafted by the Colts and traded to the Broncos, while Manning was drafted by the Colts and spent the last few years of his career with the Broncos. The duo is responsible for all three of Denver’s Super Bowl championships. There are four levels of the StarQuest / RookQuest card (blue, green, red, gold), and the /100 GOLD is, by far, the hardest to find. The only PSA 10 Gem Mint (Pop 1 of 1) example of this rare insert slings its way into MySlabs/PSA Vault Cards, and serious collectors will be on the lookout to add this unique, dynamic dual combo card to their collection.
