1959 Topps #514 Bob Gibson SGC 2.5 HOF Rookie Card St. Louis Cardinals
Description
1959 Topps rookie card of Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson, graded SGC 2.5. Please photos as there are print defects. Like many other Hall of Famers of the era, the Gibson card that many collectors clamor for is his rookie. In 1959, Topps issued another colorful set that was full of stars, multi-player cards, and included an All-Star run in the high-number series. While the set has a lot to offer overall, the only Hall of Fame player rookie card is that of Gibson (#514), making it a clear key for collectors. It is also one of the more eye-catching cards in the set, featuring a bubble-gum-colored background and a perfectly placed facsimile signature beneath Gibson’s smiling image. That’s right. Gibson is smiling. Much like the irony found on the 1957 Topps Don Drysdale rookie card, one of the most intense competitors in baseball history has a joyful look on his face. Behind the intimidating glare was a real person. The Gibson rookie is not terribly difficult in high grade, but finding a well-centered copy that is absent print defects in the light-colored background may be somewhat challenging.
