Description
This 1979 United Press International: Sports Nostalgia JOE LOUIS (vs. Max Schmeling) boxing card was issued by UPI with a unique collector experience. It has a tiny record on the back that could be played with a special player at that time to re-experience that fateful bout between these two legends of boxing at that time in 1938. Joe Louis was heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 1937 to 1949, longer than any other mari. His real name was Joseph Louis Barrow and he was born in Lexing- ton, Alabama. Louis began boxing in Detroit, Michigan where his family had moved when he was a child. He won the championship by knocking out James J. Braddock on June 22, 1937. Louis was so powerful that he became known as the "Brown Bomb- er." He defended his title against many challengers, including Max Schmeling, the German boxer who knocked out an overconfident Louis in their first fight-the only man to do so. In their second fight, on June 22, 1938, Louis, bent on revenge, savaged Schmeling, scoring a Tech- nical Knockout in the first round. After retiring in 1949, Louis tried unsuccessfully to regain his title in 1950 and again in 1951.
