Item Description Offered for your consideration is an original 1937 Wills’s Cigarette card (#16) titled "A Game of Golf, 1924." This card is part of the "Our King and Queen" series issued to mark the coronation of King George VI. The Story & History: This card depicts a significant moment in May 1924 when the King (then the Duke of York) visited the Rhondda Valley. He is shown playing golf at Ton Pentre on a course uniquely laid out by the local miners. The image captures His Majesty driving off from the first tee. Trivia & Sports History: The Captain of Golf: His Majesty served as the captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews from 1930 to 1931. A Masterful Drive: To "play himself into office" on September 24, 1930, he hit a straight 200-yard drive into high winds at 8:00 a.m. in front of 2,000 spectators. Adhesive Era: Like others in this series, the back was designed to be adhesive for use in a dedicated collector's album.
